A Community Service

about BerkLake.org

This is a non-commercial, free community service provided for the benefit of Berkeley Lake residents and organizations. Since its inception in 2005, this service has been independent of commercial and political interests. The hope is to provide an Internet contact point uniting our wonderful, disparate organizations under an easy-to-use umbrella.

Overview

This service offers our community:

  • a single Internet contact point to reach all Berkeley Lake organizations
  • a community calendar - both by organization and consolidated together
  • additional services (e.g. a photo gallery, our weather, and more)
  • better communications

This service offers organizations:

  • an easy and popular way to be found
  • an easy-to-remember website address
  • an easy-to-remember contact e-mail address
  • a calendar service
  • website hosting
  • no cost, no advertising, and no strings attached

Every organization is listed in the directory and provided with a simple web address. Contact e-mail address, calendar, and even website hosting are offered (in any combination) to serve organizational needs as they wish.

Simple, Memorable Web Addresses

Minimally, each organization is provided an easy-to-remember web address (URL) in the form of name.berklake.org. Going simply to berklake.org brings you to this website with easy to navigate links for each organization. Currently, the following simple URLs are active:

Please note that original URLs created by individual organizations (where they exist) still function normally.

Simple Contact E-Mail Addresses

Each organization with an identifiable contact point has an easy-to-remember e-mail address in the form of name@berklake.org. name is the same as used in the organization's URL (see above). Currently, the following simple e-mail addresses are available:

Community Calendar

Berkeley Lake organizations are encouraged to use our unified event calendar. Each organization's calendar is independently maintained, but also appears in the consolidated community calendar. An organization's events are automatically tagged so they may be quickly distinguished when consolidated with other calendars. This is a very popular feature!

Calendars are uniformly named name.berklake.org/calendar (i.e. the organization's simple web address followed by /calendar). The consolidated calendar is displayed if name. is omitted (i.e. berklake.org/calendar).

Organizations can easily link to their individual calendar. Support is also provided to easily include upcoming organization specific events on your website.

Website Hosting

Several alternatives exist for website hosting. Each approach provides your organization with its own name.berklake.org address. Additionally, each approach is compatible with other berklake.org services such as a calendar (name.berklake.org/calendar) and e-mail address (name@berklake.org).

  • external - the organization's website is external to this one. This works great for organizations with legacy websites such as the BLHA. Of course, external websites must be operated at that organization's own expense.
  • do-it-yourself - if you prefer to create your own website, Google Sites is an excellent free service. Your name.berklake.org address will make it easy for your visitors (who would otherwise have to enter something like http://sites.google.com/site/sites/name).
  • general - a website based on the easy-to-use CMS Made Simple package. The Lake Berkeley Chapel website is an example of this.
  • basic - usually a 1 page (although possibly more) website with general information about an organization and/or contact points. These pages are hosted as part of this CMS. The Miramont website is an example of this.

There is no cost for any of these approaches (other than external websites, of course). The "look-and-feel" for each option is independent, other than "basic" which shares that of berklake.org. All content is under the control of its owning organization.

Qualified Organizations

My intent is to strengthen the Berkeley Lake community. If your organization is non-profit, primarily serves all or a significant portion of Berkeley Lake, and is of general interest - this service is for you.

My hope is to include every organization. However, to serve this mission I must reserve the right to exclude any group which in my sole opinion may be commercial, immoral, unethical, illegal, or would be otherwise inappropriate to our residents.

Residents with Websites

Hobby and home/small business websites are listed in a special section. Entries are by the resident's name with a very short general description of the website.

Only stand-alone websites are included (no galleries or other entries of larger encompassing websites). Website content must be identifiable to that of a resident. As with organizations, I must reserve the right to exclude any website. No compensation of any type is solicited or accepted for listing.

Link Back

You are encouraged to place a link to berklake.org on your organization's website. This allows your visitors to easily find other Berkeley Lake organizations without the need for you to maintain a comprehensive and up-to-date list.
